Bozeman Farms of Flora, Mississippi has purchased 7 bulls and almost 100 heifers from Gibbs Farms over the past 5 years. Bozeman Farms is a family owned and operated SimAngus commercial cattle operation that relies on the entire family and a lot of friends and neighbors when it’s time to round up the herd, sort the calves, and ship multiple loads of calves to the feedlot, trying to beat the heat of a mid-June day.
This year D.R. Bozeman made the decision to offer his calves for sale in June and he had his homework done. He had carcass data from previous year calves, proof of superior genetics, and a well documented vaccination program. He contacted Gibbs Farms Genetic & Marketing Manager, Gordon Hodges, with all the information on his calves and the two of them started making contacts and emailing the information to prospective buyers. In less than 2 weeks, 3 loads of calves were sold and shipped to a feedlot in Oklahoma. All of the factors that would have made the Bozeman Farms calves perfect for retained ownership also added great value in their marketing. Good genetics and management will pay very little dividends unless you have it all documented and make an attempt to market your calves based on facts. D.R. Bozeman did not contact prospective buyers and tell them, “I have a couple loads of good calves that I think I’d like to sell if I can get a good price”. No, D.R. did it the right way. He did not simply try to “sell” his calves, he “marketed” them. The information that went out to prospective buyers had the exact number of steers and heifers, their estimated weight, their complete vaccination program, their genetic information, an attached copy of the carcass data from last year’s calves, and when they would be ready for shipping. He invited prospective buyers to come take a look and submit a bid, assuring them the high bidder was going to own them.
Bozeman Farms retained 39 heifer calves averaging 620 lbs. right off the cow to be developed and marketed as replacement heifers. Anyone interested in these heifers should contact Gordon Hodges for more information. |
